St. Anthony is a city in the eastern part of the state of Idaho, United States. It is located in the Upper Snake River Valley and is the county seat of Fremont County.
The city was founded in 1891 by Mormons, who were led by Charles C. Rich, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The city was named after Anthony W. Ivins, another member of the Quorum of the Twelve. The Mormon settlers in the area were seeking to establish a new community where they could live and worship freely.
The city grew quickly, with a variety of businesses and institutions being established, such as schools, churches, and a newspaper. The first school was established in 1892 and a church was built in 1895. In the early days, St. Anthony was largely an agricultural community, with farmers growing crops such as sugar beets, potatoes, and barley.
St Anthony has a rich history and culture of pioneers, farmers, and its strong Mormon heritage, it is an important area for the Mormon faith. Community events and Church-related activities such as annual Pioneer Day celebrations in July and Church-wide activities like General Conferences held in October and April, are part of the fabric of the city and its residents.
Today, St. Anthony is a small city with a population of around 4,500. It is still a farming community, but it has also become a popular tourist destination, thanks to its proximity to the beautiful natural surroundings of the Snake River and the Henry's Fork of the Snake River, which are renowned for their fishing, rafting, and other outdoor recreational opportunities.
St. Anthony boasts a small, yet vital downtown which offers a variety of shopping and dining options, as well as a strong sense of community, an important factor to this tight-knit city.
St. Anthony does have parks and recreational facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The city's main park is the Riverview Park, which features a playground, a basketball court, tennis courts, a skatepark, and a swimming pool. The park also has a river view, providing access to the beautiful Snake River and nearby recreational opportunities like rafting, fishing, and kayaking.
The city also maintains several smaller parks, such as the Rotary Park, which has a playground, picnic tables, and a small amphitheater for community events, and the Eathorne Park, with an open field and playground.
Additionally, the city has a walking path that runs through the heart of the city and connects many of the parks and recreational areas.
The city also has an extensive youth sports program that includes baseball, softball, soccer, and football.
Residents and visitors can also enjoy nearby outdoor recreational opportunities such as fishing and boating on the Snake River, hiking and camping in the nearby Targhee National Forest, skiing and snowmobiling in the nearby mountains, and hunting in the surrounding wilderness areas.
Overall, St Anthony offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities that may be enjoyed by all ages, as well as a strong sense of community that makes these activities even more enjoyable.
